Substantial solid sections give each tread the scale and presence needed to sit confidently within the curved architecture.

Project Overview

This residence uses a sweeping curved staircase as a central architectural element. The plastered balustrade creates a fluid, monolithic form, while the French oak treads introduce warmth, grain and a natural counterpoint to the restrained interior palette.

Design Response

The 300 mm wide treads allow the oak to read as a substantial piece of material rather than a thin applied finish. At 45 mm finished thickness, each tread has visual weight and permanence, grounding the light curved form of the stair.

Material & Detailing

45 mm finished thickness – gives the tread genuine substance and an architectural presence appropriate to the scale of the staircase.

300 mm width – allows the grain to read across a broad surface and reduces unnecessary jointing.

Solid construction – the tread is milled from solid oak rather than built up to imitate thickness.

Performance & Outcome

The finished staircase balances fluid form with solid materiality. The plaster provides softness and continuity; the oak gives the stair warmth, tactility and a reassuring sense of permanence.

Because the treads are solid, the timber can be maintained and refinished over time, supporting a long service life in a high-use architectural application.
