Wide solid boards turn the wall itself into a material element – expressing the grain, scale and depth of French oak rather than treating timber as a surface finish.
Project Overview
For this contemporary bedroom, the design intent was to create a calm but substantial focal point behind the bed. The wall needed warmth and texture while remaining architectural rather than decorative.
Vernay solid French oak boards in 200 × 27 mm were used to create the full-height installation. The width and thickness of the boards allow the oak to read as a genuine material element, with natural grain and tonal variation visible across the wall.
Design Response
The vertical arrangement draws the eye upward and reinforces the height of the room. Fine shadow lines between the sections give the wall rhythm and definition, while the wide oak faces allow the character of each board to remain visible.
Against the polished concrete floor, soft textiles and restrained architecture, the oak introduces warmth without overwhelming the space.

Wide solid boards – the 200 mm faces allow the natural grain structure of the oak to be read clearly across the full height of the wall.
Expressed thickness – at 27 mm, the material has physical depth and presence that distinguishes it from veneer or thin decorative panelling.
Vertical rhythm – deliberate joints create clean shadow lines and emphasise the room’s height.
Natural character – variation between boards is retained so the installation feels like timber rather than a repeated manufactured surface.
The wall becomes both the bedhead backdrop and a room-defining architectural element. Its scale gives the bedroom a sense of permanence, while the natural oak softens the concrete, glazing and minimal detailing around it.
Using solid single-origin French oak also gives the designer the ability to coordinate the same material language with flooring, stairs, doors and joinery elsewhere in a project.
Rather than applying timber to the room, the design makes the oak part of the architecture itself.
