Project Overview
In this private residence, the brief was for a warm, textural backdrop to a casual entertaining space functioning as both lounge and wine cellar. The solid French Oak joinery needed enough presence to sit confidently against the existing brickwork and exposed beams while remaining relaxed and lived-in.
Single-origin French oak planks were used for both the open bookcase and the low cabinetry, creating a continuous material frame that anchors the room and celebrates the natural character of rustic oak.
Design Response
The joinery is conceived as a full-wall open bookcase with integrated wine storage. Vertical and horizontal solid oak members form a simple grid, allowing the original brick wall to remain visible behind.
A continuous run of cabinetry and drawers provides concealed storage and a practical work surface. Different plank sections distinguish the bookcase from the cabinetry while maintaining one consistent material language. The result feels like a modern cellar library – robust for everyday use and refined enough for entertaining.

Expressed thickness – the 54 mm bookcase sections and 32 mm cabinetry planks are left visually honest, giving the joinery a substantial, furniture-like presence.

The substantial 54 mm and 32 mm solid oak sections provide stiffness and long-term durability across the full-wall composition. A clear hard wax oil retains the tactile feel and natural grain of the oak while protecting it for everyday use.
The warm tone and rustic grade soften the brick and exposed structure, creating an inviting cellar-style room in which storage becomes part of the architecture.
