Project Overview
For this home, the entrance needed to feel quietly luxurious rather than showy – something that would sit comfortably with painted panelling and classic detailing while clearly expressing real timber.
The response was a pair of made-to-order solid French oak doors, built from Vernay’s substantial wide plank sections and paired with slim French hardware. From a distance the doors read as calm, panelled joinery; up close they reveal the depth and grain of single-origin oak.
Design Response
The double door set uses restrained fielded panels so the oak itself remains the feature rather than ornate mouldings. 300 × 54 mm solid planks form the stiles and rails, giving each leaf genuine mass and stability.
The panelled insets are machined from 320 × 32 mm solid oak planks, allowing the grain to run naturally within each panel. Long black pull handles introduce a precise contemporary contrast against the pale oak and painted surround.

Solid sections – 54 mm-thick stiles and rails give the doors weight and a satisfying close, with sufficient depth for mortice locks and hardware.

Because the doors are solid timber, they can be maintained and refinished over time rather than treated as a disposable surface product. Their made-to-order construction also allows size, configuration, finish and hardware to respond to the architecture of each project.
