The reception desk becomes a material statement broad sections of rustic oak giving the joinery the scale and presence required in a hotel lobby.
Project Overview
For this hotel reception, wide solid French oak boards were selected to give the front desk the weight and material presence appropriate to the arrival space.
Rather than concealing the natural features of the timber, the rustic selection celebrates knots, grain movement and tonal variation. The broad 320 mm boards allow these characteristics to read clearly across the face of the counter.
Design Response
The counter is formed as a series of strong horizontal oak bands. The generous board width reduces unnecessary jointing and allows each plank to remain visually legible.
Set against stone, metal, leather and the more refined finishes of the lobby, the oak introduces warmth and a tactile natural element while retaining the scale required for commercial joinery.

320 mm width – unusually wide solid boards create broad uninterrupted faces and minimise the number of joints across the reception counter.
32 mm solid section – gives the joinery genuine substance rather than the appearance of a thin decorative surface.
Rustic selection – knots, grain movement and tonal variation are intentionally retained, allowing the character of individual boards to remain visible.
The finished reception desk feels robust, warm and immediately tactile. Its scale suits the hotel lobby while the oak softens the surrounding stone and formal detailing.
The project demonstrates the value of specifying joinery boards at architectural scale: fewer joins, greater visual continuity and a more authentic expression of solid timber.
For joinery where the timber is meant to be seen, board width matters. The 320 mm oak allows the tree’s grain and character to become part of the design.
